BMW 5 Series Touring vs Mercedes E-Class Estate vs Volvo V90 Wagon

Premium wagons are extremely popular in Europe, as they should be. Wagons just make more sense for people with families than sedans do. They offer more space and practicality without losing any luxury or dynamic capability. The latter is why enthusiasts like wagons so much, as they turn a normal sport sedan into a family vehicle without ruining its handling. As far as premium wagons go, though, there are really only three to consider in the current market — the BMW 5 Series Touring, Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate and the Volvo V90.  (The Audi A6 Avant is very good but very old now and due for a replacement soon)

In this three-way comparison test by Car Magazine, we take a look at these three premium wagons to see which is best. Is it the dynamic Bavarian, the smooth Mercedes or the suave Swede?

According to Car, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a very good premium wagon, with a great interior and lovely ride. However, it’s let down by a lackluster infotainment system, which is difficult and annoying to use, and sort of sloppy driving dynamics. It’s a great luxury car but not one enthusiasts will get too excited about.

The Volvo V90 Wagon is next, with a very interesting approach to the segment. While all the Germans ‘zig’, the Swedes ‘zag’. So the V90 feels very different from the other two cars and that’s good. It also has a lovely interior that features the easiest-to-use infotainment system, a lovely design and great practicality. Unfortunately, its ride is a bit too stiff for such premium car.

That leaves the BMW 5 Series Touring as the winner. It is ultimately the best combination of the three cars. The ride quality is the best of the three, as it’s both supple and engaging, and it also has the best steering. But it’s the 5 Series’ dynamics that give it the edge. It’s “because CAR is, ultimately, all about the sheer pleasure of driving, the quietly marvellous 5-series Touring simply will not be ignored.”
